The custom Zip Code object is used to populate a Market Segment for Prospect, Lead Source and Appointment records. See also: Zip Code Customization
Understanding Zip Codes and Market Segments
Each company using the Zip Code object will create a Zip Code record for each Zip Code in their territory and assign it to a Market Segment. NOTE: The system can only reference Zip Codes with a Zip Code record. If a Zip Code is used to create a Prospect and does not have a corresponding Zip Code record, the Market Segment will NOT be auto-populated.
Note: If you enter more than one Zip Code record for the same Zip Code you will get a SOQL Query Error when trying to Save an Appointment.
Be sure to check your database for the Zip Code before adding the Zip Code again.

Market Segment Best Practice
If there is an area your company specifically does not serve, using Zip Code records to indicate a Market Segment of "Out of Area" is recommended.
In this example, the business is located near Tampa, Florida and is part of a manufacturer's network. The Bradenton city/region of Florida is covered by another dealer in the manufacturers network. The business in Tampa is restricted from selling to homeowner's in the Bradenton dealer's territory.
We will use a Market Segment of "Out of Area" to indicate we should not schedule Appointments for any Prospect's in this Zip Code.
How do I know all the Zip Codes that are out of our Service area?
If you are in the United States, we recommend using the tool available on the United States Postal Service website: https://tools.usps.com/zip-code-lookup.htm?bycitystate
This allows you to capture a list of Zip Codes based on City and State.
Helpful Hint: If your company is part of a manufacturer's network, your Vendor may actually supply you with a list of Zip Codes that are included in your territory. If requested, your Vendor should also be able to supply a list of Zip Codes outside of your territory.
When an eLead is inserted from a Lead Provider, does it have a Market Segment?
No. Market Segment designation is given to Prospect records. An incoming eLead will not be assigned a Market Segment until it is converted to a Prospect.
